On September 10, 2004, a call came in to the 67 Precinct from a woman whose son was threatening her and attempting to steal her car. Squad Detectives Robert Parker and Patrick Rafferty responded to the domestic violence run in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn South. At approximately 8:40 p.m., the Detectives encountered Marlon Legere, 28, known to the Department. While attempting to remove him from his mother’s vehicle, Legere grabbed Det. Parker’s service weapon and shot both Detectives at close range. Det. Parker was hit twice in the chest and twice in the right leg. Det. Rafferty was hit twice in the chest. A third bullet pierced his right leg and entered his left thigh.
Rafferty squeezed off one round, hitting the perpetrator in the left foot and right ankle. But, Legere was able to carjack a minivan and fled the scene. He was captured less than two hours later. Both Detectives died from their wounds.
Legere was charged with multiple counts of first and second degree murder, robbery, and weapons possession. He was a nine-time loser with a long rap sheet that previously included assault, drug sales, and the rape of his brother’s common law wife.
Det. Parker, who was 43 years of age, had 22 years on the job, and Det. Rafferty was a veteran of 15 years at age 39. Both were extremely well respected and considered mentors to others in their craft.

In February of 2006, Marlon Legere was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Even his mother told reporters her remorseless son was, “a liar and a coldblooded murderer.”
“Detectives R. Parker and P. Rafferty Way” is located on Snyder Avenue between Utica and Nostrand Avenues in Brooklyn.
In 2013, Green Avenue at South Saxon Avenue in the Bay Shore section of Long Island was renamed “Det. Patrick Rafferty Way.” Click on the following pdf link to read the information in the Winter 2014 issue of The Gold Shield.

Detectives Rafferty and Parker were promoted to Detective First Grade on September 16, 2004. They both received the NYPD Medal of Honor posthumously on June 9, 2005.
Det. Robert Parker is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, 2011 Old Wilkesboro Road in Salisbury, North Carolina 28147. The DEA installed a bench in his memory near his final resting place. See the pdf file link below.
