Cause of Death: Illnesses contracted as a result of work on the rescue and recovery from the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001.

John E. Goggin was appointed to the force in January 25, 1982. During his 20-year career, he made 500 arrests, most of them for felonies. He had served in the Citywide Street Crime Unit and the Narcotics Divisions, earning him promotion to Detective on April 27, 1990. He worked in the 88 Squad, the 83 Squad, and the 94 Squad, from where he retired on February 14, 2002. Among his cases was the murder of a 17-year-old in Queens; the killer was tracked by Goggin and his partner to Greece. The victim’s mother praised what she called “the magnificent work” of the Detectives. Det. Goggin was widely admired for his skill, his expertise, and his stellar instincts.

On May 6, 2008, Goggin passed away from illnesses contracted as a result of his work on the rescue and recovery efforts of the World Trade Center attacks. Det. Goggin’s death was declared line of duty in March 2011. He was survived by his wife, his two sons, and his daughter. His family accepted his Distinguished Service Medal at the 2012 Medal Day Ceremony.
